A close upward view of one of the Mosta Rotunda’s twin towers, showing its clock face, bronze bell and richly carved limestone belfry against a deep blue sky.
This photograph focuses on one of the twin clock and bell towers of the Mosta Rotunda in Mosta, Malta. Viewed from below in strong sunlight, the tower reveals an impressive concentration of architectural detail, from the prominent clock face and bronze bell to the carved pilasters, decorative capitals, projecting cornices and ornamental stonework surrounding the belfry. The warm golden tones of the Maltese limestone stand in striking contrast to the deep blue sky. Formally known as the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Mosta Rotunda was designed by Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé and constructed during the nineteenth century. Although its enormous dome is the building’s most celebrated feature, the symmetrical towers flanking the classical portico make an important contribution to its monumental façade. Close views such as this reveal the craftsmanship that can easily be overlooked when seeing the Rotunda from a distance, particularly the intricate carved decoration surrounding the clock and arched bell opening.
