An elevated frontal view of Ta’ Pinu Basilica near Għarb, Gozo, showing its Romanesque Revival façade, rose window, dome and tall bell tower against the surrounding countryside.
This photograph presents an elevated frontal view of Ta’ Pinu Basilica near Għarb on the island of Gozo, Malta. The symmetrical limestone façade, with its prominent rose window, rounded arches and decorative stonework, stands beneath the sanctuary’s dome, while the tall bell tower rises separately to the left. The broad forecourt, neighbouring buildings and surrounding agricultural terraces emphasize the basilica’s impressive scale and its peaceful rural setting. Officially known as the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu, the church was designed by Maltese architect Andrea Vassallo in the Romanesque Revival style. Construction began in 1920, incorporating the historic chapel associated with centuries of Marian devotion. The new sanctuary was blessed and opened in 1932, and its bell tower was completed in 1934. The site became an important pilgrimage destination following events in 1883, when Karmni Grima reported hearing a voice calling to her from the old chapel. Elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica in 1935, Ta’ Pinu remains one of Gozo’s most significant religious and architectural landmarks.
