This photograph presents an elevated view of Ta’ Pinu Basilica near Għarb on the island of Gozo, Malta. The monumental limestone sanctuary rises above a patchwork of agricultural fields, with its distinctive dome, tall freestanding bell tower and Romanesque Revival façade clearly visible from this oblique perspective. The curved forecourt, with parked vehicles and a visiting coach, forms an impressive entrance to the complex, while traditional dry-stone walls, narrow country roads and cultivated terraces extend across the surrounding landscape. Officially known as the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu, the present basilica was designed by Maltese architect Andrea Vassallo, with construction beginning in 1920. The new church incorporated the historic chapel associated with the origins of Marian devotion at the site and was blessed and opened in 1932. Its prominent bell tower was completed in 1934, and the sanctuary received the title of Minor Basilica in 1935. Ta’ Pinu became an important pilgrimage destination following events in 1883, when Karmni Grima reported hearing a voice calling to her from the old chapel. Today the basilica remains one of Gozo’s most recognizable landmarks, combining monumental religious architecture with the peaceful character of the island’s rural countryside.
