The weathered limestone surfaces and restrained decorative details reflect the Mannerist character of the cathedral’s exterior. St John’s Co-Cathedral was built between 1572 and 1577 as the conventual church of the Order of St John, following a commission by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière. Designed by Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar, the building became one of the most important religious monuments in the newly established city of Valletta. Although its exterior retains the comparatively austere architectural style of the late sixteenth century, the interior was transformed during the seventeenth century into an extraordinary example of Baroque art and decoration, including major works by Mattia Preti. Today St John’s Co-Cathedral remains one of Malta’s most significant historic landmarks, reflecting the religious, artistic and architectural legacy of the Knights of St John.
