What Is a Model Release?

What Is a Model Release?

A model release is a legal permission document signed by a person who appears in a photograph, giving consent for the image to be used under specific licensing conditions.

This document helps protect photographers, buyers, and Photo and Crochet by confirming that the identifiable person in the image has agreed to the permitted use of the photograph.

When Is a Model Release Required?

A model release is generally required when a person in your image can be clearly identified.

This may include:

  • full face portraits
  • partial facial visibility
  • recognisable body features
  • distinctive tattoos or markings
  • situations where a person can reasonably be recognised

If a person cannot be identified, a model release may not be necessary.

Examples where a release may not be required:

  • silhouettes without identifiable features
  • crowd scenes with no clearly recognisable individuals
  • people photographed from behind without identifying details

Why Is a Model Release Important?

Without a valid model release, certain types of licensing may not be permitted.

A release helps avoid legal disputes relating to:

  • privacy rights
  • personality rights
  • commercial use objections
  • unauthorised endorsement implications

For this reason, commercially licensable images containing identifiable people should normally include a valid model release.

Who Can Sign a Model Release?

A model release should be signed by the identifiable person appearing in the image.

If the person is a minor, the release must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

The document should contain accurate information and valid consent.

Using Model Releases on Photo and Crochet

If your uploaded image includes an identifiable person, you may be required to provide a model release before certain licensing options become available.

Photo and Crochet provides model release management tools within the photo edit area for contributor convenience.

It remains the contributor’s responsibility to ensure that uploaded releases are genuine, legally valid, and applicable to the uploaded image.

Important Notes

  • A model release does not transfer copyright ownership.
  • A model release only covers permission from the person shown in the image.
  • Commercial licensing may require a valid model release.
  • False or invalid release documents may result in content removal or account action.
