What Is a Property Release?

A property release is a legal permission document that grants consent from the owner of private property for the use of an image containing that property under specific licensing conditions.

This document helps protect photographers, buyers, property owners, and Photo and Crochet by confirming that permission has been granted for the permitted use of the photographed property.

When Is a Property Release Required?

A property release may be required when your photograph includes identifiable private property that is the main subject of the image or where the property could create licensing restrictions.

This may include:

  • private homes or residential interiors
  • commercial buildings or private business premises
  • hotels, resorts, museums, galleries, or event venues
  • privately owned gardens or estates
  • recognisable artwork, sculptures, murals, or designs
  • vehicles, boats, aircraft, or other distinctive private assets

Public streets, skylines, or general city scenes may not normally require a property release, depending on the circumstances and local laws.

Why Is a Property Release Important?

Without a valid property release, certain commercial licensing options may not be available.

A property release helps reduce legal risks relating to:

  • private property rights
  • commercial usage objections
  • trademark or design concerns
  • unauthorised commercial representation

For this reason, commercially licensable images featuring identifiable private property should normally include a valid property release where appropriate.

Who Can Sign a Property Release?

A property release should be signed by the legal owner of the property or a person authorised to grant such permission.

The document should contain accurate property details, ownership confirmation, and valid consent.

Using Property Releases on Photo and Crochet

If your uploaded image contains identifiable private property, you may be required to provide a property release before certain licensing options become available.

Photo and Crochet provides property release management tools within the photo edit area for contributor convenience.

It remains the contributor’s responsibility to ensure that uploaded release documents are genuine, legally valid, and applicable to the uploaded image.

Important Notes

  • A property release does not transfer copyright ownership of the photograph.
  • A property release only covers permission relating to the photographed property.
  • Commercial licensing may require a valid property release.
  • False or invalid documents may result in content removal or account action.
