The abandoned indoor swimming pool at Festaval Tourist Village in Malta, now filled with discarded equipment, broken materials and rubble, surrounded by deteriorating limestone arches and weathered walls.
This photograph shows the former indoor swimming pool at the abandoned Festaval Tourist Village in Malta, now containing a collection of discarded equipment, broken materials and accumulated debris. The rectangular pool remains clearly recognisable, with its pale tiled walls and surrounding walkway still largely intact. Rust-stained surfaces, damaged equipment and miscellaneous objects occupy the empty basin, including what appears to be discarded mechanical or ventilation equipment. Around the pool, broad limestone arches divide the spacious interior, while peeling plaster, exposed masonry and graffiti reveal the deteriorating condition of the building. High rectangular windows allow natural daylight to enter, illuminating the abandoned recreational area and highlighting the extensive damage caused by years of neglect.
The indoor swimming pool was once part of the recreational facilities at Festaval Tourist Village, a former holiday accommodation complex overlooking Mellieħa Bay in northern Malta. An enclosed swimming facility would have provided guests with opportunities for swimming and relaxation regardless of outdoor weather conditions, complementing the other communal amenities of the tourist village. The surviving architecture, particularly the repeated limestone arches and elevated windows, suggests a spacious interior designed to accommodate both the pool and its surrounding circulation areas. Following the abandonment of the complex, the building gradually deteriorated as regular maintenance ceased and its interior became exposed to weathering, damage and the accumulation of discarded materials. The empty pool has effectively become a repository for unwanted objects, creating a striking contrast with its original recreational purpose. Rust marks, damaged wall finishes and vegetation visible through the windows further emphasize the passage of time. This photograph documents the transformation of a former leisure facility into a neglected interior, preserving a visual record of the architectural deterioration and changing condition of Festaval Tourist Village.
