Colourful street art depicting a female figure on a partially collapsed wall beside the abandoned outdoor swimming pool at Festaval Tourist Village in Malta, surrounded by rubble, broken limestone blocks and overgrown paving.
This photograph captures a section of the abandoned outdoor swimming pool at Festaval Tourist Village in Malta, where colourful street art contrasts with the deteriorating remains of the former holiday complex. On the left, a large orange and yellow outline of a female figure decorates a surviving wall, standing out against the pale limestone blocks and a band of blue paint along the lower section. Behind the artwork, sections of the building have collapsed, exposing irregular stonework, empty doorways and partially dismantled walls. In the foreground, the empty swimming pool retains traces of its original blue finish, while broken tiles, loose limestone blocks and scattered rubble cover parts of the basin. Weeds and small shrubs grow through cracks in the surrounding paved terrace, adding to the atmosphere of abandonment.
Festaval Tourist Village was formerly a holiday accommodation complex overlooking Mellieħa Bay in northern Malta. Its recreational facilities included outdoor swimming areas and communal spaces intended for guests enjoying their Mediterranean holidays. Following the abandonment of the development, the buildings and swimming pools gradually deteriorated, leaving exposed masonry, damaged surfaces and neglected outdoor areas. The surviving walls have also become surfaces for graffiti and street art, introducing a new visual element into the deserted surroundings. The painted female figure is particularly prominent, transforming an otherwise weathered section of the building into an unexpected artistic feature. Street art in abandoned locations often creates a striking contrast between colourful contemporary imagery and the architectural remains of earlier activities. Here, the artwork stands beside the empty swimming pool, highlighting the transformation of a former leisure facility into an overgrown ruin. This photograph documents both the continuing deterioration of Festaval Tourist Village and the colourful artistic expressions that have appeared on its abandoned walls, preserving another distinctive scene from the former Maltese holiday complex.
