The limestone gateway leading into the upper section of Fort St Angelo in Birgu, Malta, featuring a wrought-iron gate, traditional stone arch and an emblem associated with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

This photograph shows the entrance to the upper section of Fort St Angelo, the historic fortress overlooking Malta’s Grand Harbour from the Birgu peninsula. A carefully constructed limestone arch frames a black wrought-iron gate, through which a wooden doorway and a small interior passage can be seen. Above the arch, an oval emblem featuring a red cross identifies the gateway with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The surrounding limestone masonry displays the warm golden tones characteristic of traditional Maltese architecture, while decorative stonework on either side of the entrance adds architectural interest. Two large terracotta planters containing flowering shrubs stand beside the gateway, softening the appearance of the historic fortifications. Sunlight illuminates the entrance and its paved approach, creating a welcoming contrast with the imposing defensive walls.

Fort St Angelo is one of Malta’s most historically significant fortifications, occupying a strategic position at the entrance to Grand Harbour. Its origins extend back to the medieval period, when the site was occupied by a fortified castle known as the Castrum Maris, or Castle by the Sea. Following the arrival of the Knights of St John in Malta in 1530, the fortress became their principal stronghold and the residence of Grand Master Philippe Villiers de L’Isle-Adam. During the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, Fort St Angelo played a crucial role in the defence of Birgu and Grand Harbour against the Ottoman forces. The fortress subsequently underwent numerous modifications and improvements as military technology and defensive requirements evolved. During the British period, Fort St Angelo served as an important Royal Navy establishment and was known as HMS St Angelo. Following the departure of British forces, efforts were undertaken to preserve and restore the historic complex. In 1998, the Government of Malta granted the Sovereign Military Order of Malta the use of the upper part of Fort St Angelo under a long-term agreement, re-establishing the Order’s presence within one of its most important historic strongholds. The upper section includes buildings associated with the medieval castle and the Knights’ occupation of the fortress. Today, Fort St Angelo stands as an exceptional monument to Malta’s military, maritime and religious history. This photograph documents the gateway leading into its upper section, highlighting the enduring architectural character of the fortress and its continuing association with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
