Neuravensburg - Burg Neuravensburg - Weathered Keep Rising above the Castle Hill

The surviving stone keep of Burg Neuravensburg rises dramatically above the castle hill, its weathered masonry revealing centuries of history.

The surviving keep of Burg Neuravensburg is the most prominent remaining feature of the historic castle complex above the village of Neuravensburg near Wangen im Allgäu. This photograph looks upward from close range, emphasizing the rough stone masonry, irregular openings and tall, slightly tapering form of the ruined tower against the pale sky and bare tree branches. The original castle was probably founded during the first half of the 12th century and later became the centre of the lordship of Neuravensburg. From 1613 to 1617 the medieval fortification was extensively rebuilt as a representative palace, with the keep incorporated into the new complex. After the estate passed into Württemberg ownership, most of the palace buildings were released for demolition from 1837 onward and had disappeared by the mid-19th century. The massive keep resisted demolition and survived as the principal remnant of the site. During the 20th century it underwent several preservation campaigns and was adapted as a viewing platform, ensuring its continued role as the historic landmark of Neuravensburg.
