The richly decorated altar and Rococo interior of the Pilgrimage Church of Wies near Steingaden, Bavaria.
This photograph shows part of the magnificent interior of the Pilgrimage Church of Wies, also known as the Wieskirche, near Steingaden in Bavaria, Germany. The view toward the altar reveals the church’s celebrated Rococo decoration, with marble-like columns, gilded ornament, sculptural details and painted ceiling work surrounding the sacred image of the Scourged Saviour. Built between 1745 and 1754, the Wieskirche is one of Bavaria’s most important pilgrimage churches and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
