St Joseph the Worker Church - Xemxija, Malta - Recessed Archway in the Limestone Façade

This photograph shows the Church of St Joseph the Worker at Xemxija Heights in Malta. Built from the characteristic pale limestone of the Maltese Islands, the modern church has a restrained geometric appearance dominated by a tall recessed arch framing the main entrance, while smaller arched windows and decorative stonework soften the otherwise simple façade. The Franciscan Capuchins established a presence at Xemxija around 1936, initially using the site as a summer residence. As the surrounding community grew, a larger church became necessary and the foundation stone of a purpose-built church was laid in 1959. Structural problems with the site eventually led to the demolition of that building. Work on the present church followed in the early 1990s, with its foundation stone laid on 21 February 1993. The new Church of St Joseph the Worker was inaugurated on 25 June 1994 and formally consecrated by Archbishop Joseph Mercieca on 20 February 2000. It continues to serve the Xemxija community within the parish boundaries of St Paul’s Bay.
