St Anthony of Padua Church - Għajnsielem, Gozo - Ornate Limestone Façade and Bell Tower

The richly decorated limestone façade and open bell tower of the Franciscan Church of St Anthony of Padua in Għajnsielem, Gozo.

This photograph presents an imposing upward view of the Church of St Anthony of Padua in Għajnsielem, Gozo. The warm Maltese limestone façade is enriched with projecting cornices, pilasters, sculpted architectural details and niches, while an open bell tower rises prominently above one corner of the building. The church belongs to the Franciscan Friars Minor, whose permanent presence in Gozo began at Għajnsielem in 1899. After initially occupying rented accommodation, the Franciscans established a convent and proceeded with the construction of their own church dedicated to St Anthony of Padua. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1902 and construction progressed rapidly, allowing the completed building to be blessed on 28 October 1906. It was subsequently consecrated in 1912. The church and adjoining Franciscan community have remained an important centre of religious life in Għajnsielem, where the annual feast of St Anthony continues to be celebrated with liturgical services, a procession and the traditional blessing and distribution of St Anthony’s bread.
