The Franciscan Friars Minor established their first convent in Gozo at Għajnsielem at the end of the 19th century. Construction of the convent and church began in 1901, with plans prepared by Fr Joseph Diacono and building work carried out by Wigi Vella. The church was financed through the generosity of Joseph Sultana, a benefactor from nearby Nadur. Building work was completed in 1905, and Bishop Giovanni Maria Camilleri blessed the church on 28 October 1906. Six years later, on 4 February 1912, the same bishop solemnly consecrated the church. It remains home to a Franciscan community and an important centre of devotion to St Anthony of Padua in Gozo.
