The Zugspitze is with 2962 m above sea level the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains as well as the highest mountain in Germany. It lies south of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the Austrian-German border runs over its western summit. South of the mountain summit is the Zugspitzplatt, a high carst plateau with numerous caves. On the flanks of the Zugspitze are three glaciers, including the two largest in Germany.
Three cable cares run to the top of the mountain, while the Zugspitzplatt can also be reached by a cogwheel train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen
